Workshop on New integrated design strategies to tackle remediation projects in Italy. Ferrara, Sept. 17th, 2014.

Golder Associates and the Embassy of Canada in Rome are pleased to organize a conference on Integrated Strategies for the Remediation and Renewal of Urban Brownfields during Remtech, Italy’s main exhibition on remediation technologies and contaminated sites.

The conference, which will be held on September 17th2014, stems from a study conducted by Golder together with the architecture firm TRA to investigate how an integrated design process can lead to advantages in the renewal of brownfields in a stagnant real estate market. The event will see the participation of both national and international lecturers coming from different fields, including Canadian and Italian authorities, experts on stakeholder engagement, representatives from the Oil&Gas sector and from environmental associations. During the three hour session lecturers will discuss about case studies and good practices trying to find common strategies and innovative solutions to integrate the individual expertise into a more holistic process.

GoldSET in E&MJ - the Engineering and Mining Journal

GoldSET and its applicability to mining, and the tailings facility site selection process in particular, is featured in the new technology section of a special global business report by E&MJ, the Engineering and Mining Journal.

The report provides an extensive look at mining in Québec, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Canada.

As a technology tool, GoldSET can cover social responsibility and environmental aspects of a mining project.

“We mostly apply it to the tailings facility site selection process,” said Pierre Fréchette, principal and senior hydrogeologist at Golder, who further explains, “By law in Québec, you cannot simply choose the most convenient location for a tailings facility. You need to prove to the (regulatory) authorities that you have made the best possible compromise between economic efficiency and environmental factors.”

GoldSET is intended to assist our clients in analysing and reviewing the various options in the shortest time possible. It is an integral part of our goal of helping mining clients maintain their commitment to the environment while ensuring an economically viable project.

Review of the GoldSET Mining – Tailings Management modules

The Golder Tailings Design Practice Manual is currently being drafted in Australia, which will provide basic information, convenient guidance and a level of consistency in approach that Golder tailings engineers and support staff world-wide can refer to when helping our clients on their needs to design or run an audit on a tailings management facility.

The established GoldSET Mining – Tailings Management modules are being reviewed and updated as part of the manual. This will increase the robustness of the GoldSET modules for use by Golder in assessing and selecting potential site and/or technology options.

This update to the Mining – Tailings Management modules is a collaborative process, primarily being undertaken by Hugh Jones and Alice Greenhill in the Melbourne office. Hugh brings a wealth of knowledge to this update, having over 45 years of experience in the mining industry, initially as an exploration geologist in East Africa and Australia before specialising in environmental aspects of the industry in 1974. Alice has a Master’s Degree in Environment and Sustainability, which she has used as a platform in providing sustainability advice to and undertaking sustainability reviews for clients in various industries.
